It's funny how life can somehow completely change in an instant, with no warning at all. The last Tuesday of June 2005 started as a perfect day. That day, one of my students was performing at the Washington state convention honors recital in Spokane. To say that she and I were both deeply thrilled at having such an honor is an understatement. My perfect day ended abruptly, however, on the drive home. It was pouring rain, and I was driving faster than my red Trans Am could handle in those conditions. In a moment, the car was out of control, spinning and hydroplaning. I was going at least 70 miles per hour when I hit a rock wall head on. The car flipped end-over-end who knows how many times, and then crazily slid before coming to a stop upside down, trapping me inside. To free me, the paramedics had to cut the car apart.
